David Coffaro Vineyard and Winery Winemaker's Diary

Week 13
March 25, 2001 to March 31, 2001

Wednesday March 28,  2001

20 days until taxes are due.

I received a shipment of wine from WineExchange today. It included 11 bottles of Mayo "Ricci" Vineyard and one bottle of Mayo "Ricci" vineyard Reserve. Yes there are two bottlings and I did not know until I called up to order the "Ricci". The reserve is 15.9 alc. and the regular is 14.9 alc. I suppose most of you will prefer the higher alcohol wine with more oak. Yes it is more concentrated and yes too raisiny for me, but it was probably dry. Definitely a Parker wine. As I said a couple of weeks ago, I really love the Mayo Ricci regular.  I was confused and hopefully many of you will not be. As you know I have made two different zins only twice and I have called one Neighbors' Zinfandel and the other Zinfandel (estate bottled) so there is no confusion between the two very different wines.

I have tried many of my 1999 wines recently and have realized that they have come around somewhat. The 99 zin has always been in balance, but the carignan and estate cuvee have been tart. Those two have come around somewhat as well as the aca modot. You could try any of those, but remember that 1999 will be a vintage that will last for a very long time. 1999 Block 4, cab franc and petite sirah have also, seemed to me, to be interesting right from bottling. I am still offering $30 to anyone who has a bottle or several bottles of my 1994 or 1995 wines. I am also offering a three for one trade: 3 bottles of my 2000 wines or 2001 wines for one bottle of 1994 or 1995. Any takers?

We have received a few orders for 2001 wines today so I know some of you have discovered that the 2001 pre harvest futures offer has started. I know we say that Pat and I are going to be too busy to answer the phone, but I enjoy talking to you---so if you have any questions after thoroughly reading over all the extensive information we have put up on our site, please don't hesitate to call. Seriously, we have tried to make this offer clear, but we know that every year there are things we have forgotten to explain. I look forward to hearing from you. Also if any of you local or visiting friends want to come by and taste the 2000 wines and discuss the 2001, I plan on being here every day for the next two weeks except the 4th and 5th.
