Tonight I opened our last bottle of 1994 David Coffaro Estate Cuvee, alongside a bottle of the recently-released 1997 David Coffaro Estate Cuvee -- what an interesting comparison!!
The '94 was actually *much* darker in color than the '97, and the '94
initially showed very plummy fruit, which later developed into anise/licorice/cranberry
notes, very rich and complex on the palate, though with just a trace of
that
older wine palate development (we thought that "it's time" for this
gem!!), long and full finish that lasted quite a while, this '94 showed
very, very well for the entire 3+ hours it was open.
The '97, in contrast, is clearly just a baby, with the intense core of red fruits that Dave's wines always seem to show, the Carignane in particular seemed very identifiable and currently dominant in this '97, though the wine continued to improve throughout the 3+ hours it was open, I would guess that this wine needs six to twelve months of aging to really hit its stride, but will be another in a (getting longer!!) line of fine Coffaro Estate Cuvees!!!
In any event, as always, such a treat to open two lovely gems like this,
especially knowing that these are as close to a sure thing as exists in
the wine world today!! Kudos to Dave and Pat for continuing to make
such amazingly
consistent, fine and complex wines!!
