Sunday September 12, 2021

Good news, Jose is back after getting cleared by his doctor so he is here this morning with Salvador at 7:30am to press the Pinot we harvested on September First. We usually press when there is some residual sugar in the bin but with Jose out and my lack of experience with the press we decided to wait until today. I assume there is no sugar left which is just fine. Tomorrow Jose and Salvador will press some Zinfandel.

Friday we harvested 2 bins of Block One, the stressed vines with few green leaves, and it came in at 23.5 sugar. We also harvested 2 bins of Block 4, a section which has mostly Zinfandel and those bins came in at 27.5 sugar SO the 4 bins fermenting together will have plenty of sugar and thus we may have to add some water to keep the alcohol down to 15%.

Tomorrow we will pick the rest of Block One and some more Block 4. Block One always goes into our Block 4 Field Blend.

Tuesday September 14, 2021, still hot but will cool down

Sorry there was a Raider game on last night so I am ......recovering, a violent sport and so intricate also.............

"So I said......."You know which cherry tomatoes planted is the best.........sure he says." Every night I go out now and check out two cheery tomato plants up near the office and the vineyard SO the one up by the office is the best and CATARINO agrees. I love CATARINO, he understands me, even though I am a gringo, we kid all the time WEe, Weee like each other since he says he is OK for a Mexican, I say he is my best friend right now..........

Since the Raiders won and before that, we have harvested many tons of fruit, each ton should produce 67 cases. We now have brought in all our Block 4 sections............

also years ago a friend of Catarino said he could plant some Carignan vines he had no place for them and we said sure since we had no vines in the corner so now those vines gave us 800 pounds today........sure Carignan at this time of the year is only 24 sugar

BUT Block 4 is coming in with the same yield as last year and is 27 sugar,,,,,,,,,,,,,,.............what is going on.........yes we need to harvest fast...........Malbec, Merlot and some Cab tomorrow...........Tomorrow is another day?

Wednesday September 15, 2021, cool today, rain? 42 Years ago:

Back on September 15, 1979 we took our first grapes to Gallo and it was an interesting day. We all went out and helped harvest but the 4 great Mexican guys harvested most of it.........BUT was interesting, my

My sweet first Niece came out and helped us harvest, on September 15, 1979. It was her 16th birthday so I wish Karen another great birthday...........

Today we harvested Malbec and Merlot and all sugars are high, not too high like Zin which has raisins and could go up after rehydrating. Tomorrow we will harvest our high end Cab vines and tonight I did try our 2017 Cab compared to 3 other highly rated cabs and I can assure you, our cab is to the equal.........I do not lie, like other politicians........too much information

Finally after years, I did some scallops with a crust on the BBQ. I had a rendition a long time ago in a restaurant and I have tried 10 times. Recently I found a good one and I did do Scallops on the BBQ with a nice crust..........

Back to see and taste tomatoes again a......fun

WOWOWOWO. it is now 7:50pm and UPS guy came in, he is a substitute but he was so nice delivering me 2 incredible fish......so I asked him when will he be home and he said: about 45 minutes and I will see my wife............SOSOSO I gave him a bottle of Block 4. He was happy and so am I😂............

Tomorrow is Cab and we will see what the rain chances are????

Thursday September 16, 2021, cool today again, rain? Maybe a little

another complicated day as usual. We need 70 degrees to do our M/L so we are waiting for hotter weather. We started at 10:15 today to get more heat when the fermenter is full So we can start at 10 and finish at 1pm. and still at 1pm when we finished we did not get 70 degrees in all bins Good plan, Dave?, but it was still not warm when we finished so we will wait again tomorrow to start harvesting  and wait another day to inoculate today's Cab.

I know I have related some of all our great food we have Every night. Even with the stress to harvest the best fruit at the right time, I still have a great meal in the evening. Tonight we had our great lamb and roast potatoes and it was perfect so now I have to think about tomorrow!!!!!!!!!!

We have problems, what SO............., we have many varieties out in the vineyard ready to harvest but we will wait unto next week since we may have a little rain which will only wash some dust off our vines, but who knows, but it will be cold........when rain comes here almost all the time it will not be warm, 50 degrees.........so no harvest Saturday or Sunday........

Tomorrow we will finish our Cab from the older vines and today the sugars were over 27%. So we also have Sangiovese which I will try to make an intense wine that is produced in Italia. Barbera is ready Block 6 Zin is ready and Sagrantino is ready and many more, but we need warmer temperatures so we will wait until Monday................I need an IPA, oh Dave you just had a sip of Torpedo...........

Last thing to say, I just finished a great book for me, to others?: The Keeper Of Happy Endings

Friday September 17, 2021....cooler again and there may be some rain, but Little

Another day in my life..........Kate and Bryan are back so it will be fun. Bryan and Kate have been away with their jobs and I know Bryan and I want to see how we did when Jose was not here so we will check.

Jose, I gave him and Salvodor a raise. They are on Salary so now they may work a few longer hours. I especially was happy to give Salvador a raise. He even goes out to pick grapes when he has time..........he never stops......

Jose is organized like Catarino and I. Catarino, yes he got a raise also along with all the pickers. We all have important jobs to create another great vintage...........I love what I do.........that said!!!!!!!!!!!

There may be a little rain but nothing which will hurt our fruit SOSOSOS we will start again on Monday by making an interesting Sangiovese, and Nebbiolo blend, it will be intense............

Tomorrow is another day?

Saturday September 18, 2021....may be some rain, but Little

The rain chances have been delayed until 5 pm or so so we are in good shape for several customers to come in today. We can also accommodate them under our covered awning right outside the winery. The winery is full of fermenters so tasting inside is not an option.

Sunday September 19, 2021

We did get a little rain but only 0.20 inches which is not enough to harm the grapes. With the predicted wind to arrive this afternoon or evening we should be dry of any moisture on the vines tomorrow morning. And the leaves will be cleaner from the rain and thus hasten the ripeness..........

Monday September 20, 2021......soon 12 days light and 12 days dark...........Close to 100 today............

We did harvest today and will harvest for several more days........

The Market was down today so I may finally be investing in half my cash.........

It was hot again so that makes it harder to decide what to pick next.......it is a jig saw adventure where do we go

That said, we did bring in all our Sangiovese and Nebbiolo. In the past I have always waited to the end the harvest with Nebbiolo because no one in Sonoma County or in California have been successful growing this DYNAMIC grape in Italia. I only have 250 pounds, but Barolo is a great wine A challenge for me in the future but, also the Sangiovese grape has produced similar wines, Brunello, I think similar in style to our Aglianico.....intense........I digress

What was the surprise of the day the 250 pounds of Nebbiolo was way too ripe,.,..,we always picked it too late, but today Nebbiolo over 26% sugar............I may need to bud over some vines, but first I have to see if the blend turns out OK................

We also harvested some Sagrantino and Barbera and those blends are going into Italiano.......... will........be gre4at>>>>>>>>>BUT

As I have said I am making a blend of Nebbiolo and Sangiovese and will ferment in two French barrels, so only 48 cases produced............

I can't drink all of the result but I can try.........so let me know if you want any of these 48 cases.......

I am excited as usual, my Raiders won and The Pack should win...........IPA!!!!!!!!!!!!....Have you ever had some great residual dinner still stuck in your teeth in the evening about an hour ago. I have that happen a lot but.........a pick aaaand IPA helps...............

Tuesday September 21, 2021......soon 12 days light and 12 days dark...........100+ today....again............

Harvest, a complication.......intense!!!!!!!!!!!

So we did bring in the last of the Barbera at high sugar and the last of Sagrantino and started our Lagrein..........

Tomorrow we will start on our Block 6 Zin which is younger vines, we have all the Old vines in and pressing now. We have a few French barrels so besides using two for my Luminaire blend we have to decide where those last 7 barrels go. I am not a big fan of French oak but Bryan wanted me to order 10 barrels so 2 went into my Luminaire, Bryan?

Sure my back is hurting during Harvest as usual, but I deal with it and for now I do not use a cane.........OH, maybe with a cane I could walk a little faster BUT, where would I put it in between when...........up on my Forklift and tasting sugar samples at the crusher.......no cane

So it will still be hot for awhile so as I said, I need to figure out what needs to be brought in NOW.

We can wait but grapes may be too ripe and then sugars could go down and acids will really go down. We brought in Tartaric acid if needed.

As you know I love the challenge, everyday is interesting.

I do read a book about every two weeks or so and it helps me to escape for a few hours in a whole day. Sometimes I read in the office during the afternoon and take a nap for a few minutes.........it is a nice escape. I tried a new book and it was too fluff, no more by that author..........

Catarino and I agreed today we only get 6 to 7 hours sleep........we are too into the Harvest............

Tomorrow Is Another Day

Wednesday September 22, 2021......soon 12 days light and 12 days dark...........98 today....tomorrow will be hotter....
Summer is over?

Stress what is different, it is Harvest.

We brought in some of our young Zinfandel which is real popular and is called Block 6 Zin. The sugar was lower than we thought, but we have another Zin on the Knoll which may be riper, but if the Knoll is the same.......the bottom line is we still will have Zin in the mid 14.5 alcohol which is fine. We have the Knoll where the Pomo's lived years ago and it has more sugar. We are still aiming for 15% alcohol instead of 15.5% on average in the last several years. I know many of you like our style so we will see what happens.........

Tomorrow we have one box of the lower sugar Block 6 Zin and we will try one bin on the Knoll. That will decide if we should bring in all the rest of Block 6 Zin components.............Oh.........Petite Sirah is ready next week........A blend of 15% goes in to the Block 6 Zin...............

We checked Aglianico and it should be ready soon. Tomorrow, we will try one bin into the last of the Lagrein for Italiano...

As I have said several weeks ago, there are no leaves in some sections we are picking so.....it is complicated, those vines have less sugar so I am the master blender.............

Tomorrow Is Another Day? But first an IPA

Saturday September 25, 2021.......too much happening!!!!!

Sorry for no info here...........It has been intense days with harvest and things were Great for harvest.

There was a problem with my Amazon Subscribe a save and things were duplicated. It would take me a long time to explain but the bottom line is there were two addresses in my account so after weeks Amazon on the phone helped me to correct all the problems..........

We harvested all the Block 6 Zin at good sugars, I say that because we may not have to add water and hope to have a wine close to 15% alcohol,,,,,,,,complicated!!!!! We also brought in all the Lagrein and started on the Petite Sirah.........

We are thinking about a new way to get internet to us WAY up the valley. Years ago I paid a lot of money to Get a local small few people to get a relay up the valley so I could get at least 2MB. We have increased it over the years but I still have to pay $200 a month. Kate and Bryan are here so they need a more stable internet so we will try a new one on Monday.........update then........

IPA....................Now

Giants, Boxing, Raiders tomorrow, Packers and 49ers on Sunday Night and then harvest more Petite Sirah on Monday..............I love what I do...........

Monday September 27, 2021.......AGAIN..........too much happening!!!!! cold today we did not harvest

We have had decent internet here for 20 years because of Vista broadband but they have not been responding to make sure Kate and Bryan have good enough service to do Microsoft meets?, what ever that means. Today we had a company which is local also like Vista but they seem to be in more control of what they have to offer. They have a direct shot to our Guesthouse, not like Vista......it is complicated, but we are going with the new company, AVISP...........

We probably have 3 more weeks of the Harvest. We have many grapes ready to harvest and we took off today because we need 70 degrees on the fruit for M/L............We may pick on Saturday, our warriors are ready..........

An IPA helps........

Tuesday September 28, 2021.......AGAIN..........too much happening!!!!! a little warmer today we did harvest

Today was cold in the morning, as we know we have less light. We did harvest 2 tons of Petite Sirah and will finish tomorrow and then into Aglianico.

It is predicted to get much warmer so we will be harvesting on Saturday. We can bring in Cab Franc and the rest of the Merlot in the next few days............

stress time with the S.F. Giants and now the Raiders, my two teams

I sold all my short term trades with TSLA. The stock hit a high of 900 in January and I bought 475 shares over the next 6 months as low as 540. I sold at times with trades, always making a profit and I last sold at 792 so still down from the high. I do still have a Long term holding of 1650 shares at an average price of 56.......long story

So I checked out the new internet again to day and everything is OK. We will see more on Thursday and Friday when Kate and Bryan come back but I have decided to drop Vista Broadband. Some of it is communication.......I asked for a termination and they have not responded.....................................more tomorrow?

Thursday September 30, 2021

I have to be organized

Today was usual, but more complicated in the short term. We had Aglianico to decide to put in Italiano and Escuro, look up the percentages if you want. So I have to decide where that Variety goes in the mix........

then there was Montepulciano for Italiano.......and we harvested all of it, about 2 bins, more than we expected, but they were cold and we need 70 degrees SO we started Cab Franc for Aca Modot up front near the house and we had more than we thought...........over 80 degrees now 10am

We decided to hold off until tomorrow the Montepulciano.........stored it in a cold building for the night,

and we did process the Cab Franc with the last of the Merlot. Tomorrow we will mix the Montepulciano with some Aglianico which we decided not to harvest today.....

Some of this is about sending out warriors............out in hot weather and it did get over 90 degrees by 1 pm, they needed to come in......

so we will do more tomorrow and into Saturday

Saturday October 2, 2021

Quick update........Kate and Bryan are here and Susie is here for a visit........Farro and shrimp tonight.

We did harvest some Aglianico, the rest will go to Escuro. And we did combine it with Montepulciano for our Italiano Blend.

We also started our Carignan so we will finish Carignan today......
