Monday September 10, 2018

Yes Harvest is on!! We are harvesting old vine zin in block 3 and now south in Block 4. Block 4 North is where all the different vines are so also Block one has many different varieties so we harvest Block 1 on Wednesday and then start on Block 4.

Our sugars have shot up to over 27% sugar. We have the right to add water to make sure our alcohol does not go up to 16%...........new rule by the government..........more taxes

7:20 Pm: So know it is near, the first Raider game so I will be interested to see how they can beat the other great California Bear, Berkeley quarterback. Rogers, Cal and now The Raiders have to go against Goff, the younger Cal Qb.............I hope for the best.............Raiders

Tuesday September 11, 2018

It has been another intense day, the deck is going in on Thursday and of course I will have to wait awhile for the Raiders............................................

Of course I guess I have more important things to think about, I sure can't control what the Raiders do but I can be organized to KEEP harvesting. The Zins yesterday have swelled up to 29% sugar. That could mean the limit for a still wine. A still wine to me is a wine that has no sugar left at bottling but preferably after fermentation.  As an amateur I produced wines at 17% alcohol so The TTB used to charge us a lot of money to produce wines that are over 14%. This goes way back when few Cabernet in the last century was over 14% alcohol. So most sweet fortified wines were about 17% alcohol but for some reason the TTB, Government decided back in the 30is, I suppose: we will tax all these fortified wines even if they are still wines, even at 14%.

Then HEY............we wine makers in 2000 started to make zinfandel with alcohol of over 14%. So we were charged at the same rate as fortified wines, that was 7 times the normal rate. OK, some of our wines were under 14% but 90% were over 14% and even some got close to 16%................

OK, someone in the Trump administration decided these taxes are too high fooooooorrrrrrrr someone like me. I don't think so but somehow someone outside the administration asked to lower the taxes for wine made under 16%

The bottom line for tonight only is, Dave bad English should be, as follows:

I pay less now because I produce less that is 16% alcohol Soooooooo today we added 40 Gallons of water, allowed in California to rehydrate to finish wine under 16%. Our fermenters of Zinfandel would have fermented to well over 17% Alcohol..............I love what I do

Sunday September 16 2018

As usual it is unpredictable....Harvest...........Catarino had brought in samples which are high sugar so we need to Harvest more next week. When we bring in the actual crop it is usually lower in sugar because Our Great Pickers want to be quick, even though they are paid by the hour.......so we have to ask them to only pick the darkest bunches,,,,..........Oh I forgot: The pickers like to start in the morning when it is only 50 degrees or less so 7:00Am......no light!!! to see the red bunches....... It is so complex for all of us!!! I digress...............

And now we have these nice Latinos building our new deck. We had a bid for $80,000 to do this new deck and these nice friends of Catarino came in at less than half the price...............

OK, the sugar samples are heading up! Every year is different so here is, young vines and came in late each of the first few years ..................

Malbec? Malbec is a small component in a Bordeaux wine even in California. Malbec is an interesting taste and I hope to make a 100% Malbec here. I have not been too interested in what I have tried in South America. SO

We have Malbec here and it was planted in a good area and we will harvest some tomorrow

My favorite Niece is not coming to Kate's wedding so I am really upset.........

Also The Raiders lost again today........so tomorrow is another day......

We are picking Malbec tomorrow and some Merlot. Also we will pick some Zin...........

Tuesday September 18 2018

8:15 Pm: I wish I could relate all that has happened in the last few days.

There is a deck going up below our crush pad. Susie had the idea so we have many friends of Catarino's and cousins, (Catarino keeps calling everyone he referrers me to as Cousins) .........it is so about Political polarization these days but I need to say these Latinos are GREAT. I wish Trump was here and listened.....oh gee I am digressing, no chance

So these nice Latinos are constructing the deck now. We had to figure out how to move the water from our crush pad down to our septic system so we are trying to figure it out in the last few days

Harvest!!!!!!!!!!!!! It is the ultimate experience for me. You really have to have a passion for it. It is stressful and a lot of constant work and guessing!!!!!!!!!

Most vineyard people and winemakers know how to coordinate their guesses (an estimate or conjecture) in the vineyard and when the fruit comes in? We could think the acids are fine, sugars are fine and then finally you bring in a few tons after many samples of one bucket, of course at random what ever that means..............

There can be a big difference just taking a bunch on the sun side in the after noon compared to one in the morning and then there are bunches down low or the back side. It is an art and Catarino and I combined have learned about samples for 70 years and then you see the results and decide what to do next................

So that is where we are. We have taken two days off and did MANY samples from the vineyard. We will start again on Thursday but it looks like we will be then harvesting for days........Cab, PS, Last of the Zin, Lagrein, Merlot, Guess?

I bought some shares of TSLA and made another profit by selling yesterday so Tesla stock went down 6% today. So I was guessing, yes. I love the stock market my big love still but I love making wine, I have a little more control!!!!!!

Sunday September 23 2018

We did harvest on Thursday, Friday and Yesterday. In the meantime we were pressing a lot of wine into barrels and the quality looks great. We are also trying to keep our alcohols down and the first Zin pressed was only 14.4 alcohol. On Thursday we harvested our first substantial crop of Sagrantino, followed by Lagrein and some of our younger Zinfandel which will go into My Zin or RaiZin. Tomorrow we will pick the rest of the Lagrein and then some Sangiovese and Barbera which will go into our Italian Style.

Monday September 24 2018

There is a warm up again so it looks like we will have highs near or above 100 for a few days. We just finished getting the results for the samples and we have many varieties ready to harvest. Tomorrow we will start on Petite Sirah and then follow with Cabernet Sauvignon. On Friday we hope to start on Aglianico or Carignan, both seem to be ready.

Tuesday September 25 2018

It is 40 degrees outside  at 7:00Am. The high today will be close to 100 again.

We have to think about alcohols, I guess I should make the decision? In the past many years our alcohols in our most expensive Reds, like Block 4 have been moving up to a high alcohol approaching 16%.

So this year Josh went off to Texas, his home. I hired him a few years ago because he knew a lot more than I about fermenting wine at different wineries, but he had not experienced this vineyard. The way Catarino and I grow grapes is not what some wineries do. We do not mind raisins in the bunches.......

OK, Catarino and I try to talk back and forth everyday to decide when to pick. Harvest is the most stressful thing I have experienced and I know Catarino feels the same.

Zinfandel is hard!!!!!! It is by far the most complicated Variety to figure out what will happen in the next few days after harvest. Every Zinfandel lots have come in with nice sugar, but as usual the raisins take effect. And then Jose and I have to figure out what the final alcohol could be. This year is just like others, when we bring in grapes with a sugar reading of 25% (A potential alcohol of 15%) the next day or two, the sugar can go up to 27% or more. This year we have tried to keep the sugars down by rehydrating with water so our alcohols will come out closer to 15% or even a little lower. Sure that sounds great but what if our customers do not like our different style. Time will tell.

Friday September 28 2018

I was glued to politics yesterday. No one I know personally, except Brad, is in to politics like me. I am similar to Trump, we both like listening to Cable. So I missed Nothing yesterday. I live here and only did 1.8 miles on my new Apple Watch, 2.5 so far tracking in three days, nice. I sat near my TV all day

I thought both were so believable until I saw Kavanaugh take several sips of water, maybe, I would have to go back, but it seemed like twice a minute. I thought of myself and I figured he had to get up to pee? Then Pat said Dave??, why do you like this guy? I said I am just saying he is doing a good job. Then I saw he was not nice to some people. He blamed everyone, especially the Democrats. I try to see both sides so I am glued to anything that happens, even just before i go to bed.

OK, TSLA was down 14%, this one day. I sold some a few days ago, so I bought again. I may sell more.

The Harvest!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh sorry, The Harvest is too easy. That is why I can dwell on other big things.........:Like our new deck!!!!!!!
Then our new Tasting Room, soon we have GLASS doors, 10 feet high.

So I am saying we are 2/3 done for Harvest. Our cab was great, our Aglianico is really different, no raisins ? Carignan, Cab Franc, Merlot, all sugars were either 25% or 26%...........tomorrow is another day

Posted late..........Saturday September 29 2018

I have gotten in trouble as usual but I thought sense it is my anniversary?

I was supposed to head in to Healdsburg for a dinner. I guess I am old but I like to see what is happening.  I was raining so

I decided on Sunday night and we had a great meal at Bravas..............

Wednesday October 3 2018

Rain has been here during Harvest  for many times. Rain if early can cause rot. We are through with Zin and that is one grape that does not like rain. I fear for my friends who have not harvested Zinfandel.........Zin has thin skin not like Cab and we still have crop out there but what is left can stand up to what has occurred.........

One inch.............We had enough rain to delay our Harvest. We did some sugar tests because sugars may come down after this shot of water.........yes with one inch of rain, I am sure all our vines have had a nice time soaking up the energy .......I like to escape..........

Yesterday........Wow, at 7am we had many trucks come in and it was raining cats and dogs..........

They asked if they could move a fermenting bin out.......sure I said and then they started putting real strong toxic paint on something, I assume to hang up our staves...............In sutler ways they asked me many times if the chemicals could hurt my wine, I said no unless you through something in them.......The fermenters are moving more gas than anyone around her and so by sending out energy nothing will come in by air............

Then Ken came in to take my 4010 out and replace with the 5040 I had before...........long story

Then Pillor showed up and wanted to know if he could patch up the floor..................he did and we now have options

Then the head man came in and wanted to know if Kate had approved the payment of $20,000 or so. I informed him he had not cashed the last check, I think $40,000. Kate is sharp and we have to keep on these guys....................

I closed out my last long term shares of Tesla and I will know how I did.

Jose and Salvador had to deal with all this activity yesterday, I could send a picture but we had no room, so we had to move things around.....and then in cabinets coming in invading our fermenters, like I said one fermenter had to be moved out.....But.......We were cool, Jose and Salvador will start pressing tomorrow. The staves and cabinets will be in place soon? they did not show up today after doing little yesterday............

SSSSSSSOOOOOOOOO we have Petit Verdot grapes left, maybe my favorite wine. Then we have Montepulciano, takes a long time and then we still..............have Peloursin and Cab Franc and Grenache and Syrah and Barbera................2/3 through.............

Another transition day for our Harvest. It rained today also for a few times so we are scheduled to harvest Friday......sugars were down today as expected but some were high so as I have said this is complicated but easy after seeing all my options.........

Merlot is ready, Cab Franc is close but we probably harvest them for Aca Modot on Monday.

Terre Melange is next. It will be interesting on Friday: what will we get!!

Syrah is not ready but losing leaves, only 21.5 sugar on a test today. Grenache is 25.4, Peloursin is 22.8. We may be able to harvest all at once, that is our plan on Friday, two more days to think.........

tomorrow is another day..................................................

Thursday October 3 2018

So it rained some today not much to cause grape quality to go bad, but it does delay our Harvest until Monday.......long story!

Friday October 5 2018

I had trouble posting my diary so this will be better:

With rain yesterday we did decide to delay Harvest until Monday. Our deck is finished tomorrow, beautiful!! The staves are still being installed inside the new tasting room and they will look great. We have already had some customers come over to take a look at all our new facilities. The 10 foot high four 5.5 foot Glass Doors will be installed on October 17.....................................

Tesla is down again so I sold  my trades and made a lot of money. I also sold my long term holdings so at this time I have made enough to purchase another Tesla, but no I am happy with my 100D.

The renovation of the winery has been an adventure just like many things in my life. It will be amazing.............

I did not think Kavanaugh projected himself as an impartial Supreme Court Justice. He was very negative toward the Democrats even back a year or two by referencing Clinton. Hey he will be the law of the land so be it. I did like when he said he liked beer..........

Kate and Bryan and even Susie will be here tomorrow, it will be an adventure. Susie was the one to suggest a deck and she will see the finished Masterpiece............
