David Coffaro Vineyard and Winery Winemaker's Diary

Weeks 15 - 16
April 6, 2003 to April 19, 2003

  Thursday April 10, 2003

I have been glued to the TV showing the liberation in Iraq. It is captivating so I have to apologize for not writing a diary for 10 days.

Our 2003 Pre Harvest Futures offer started on April 1 and I have been happy with the response. At first it appeared that our orders were less than last year which was accurate, but after further evaluating the numbers, the size of the orders has been amazing. I just looked back to check out our prices in past pre harvest offers and noticed that we are back to 2000 prices. Actually we are charging even less for our Aca Modot reverting back to 1999 prices. Maybe that is why our case totals are higher. My costs are up somewhat, but as I have said before, I am making enough money and would like to pass it on to you.

I have the first indication on the crop level for 2003. It looks like another bountiful year in our vineyard. Prices should continue to fall if this is what is seen in other vineyards around here. As I have said before, the best wine I have made is from high yield years. Just look at 2001 and 2002 years which produced big crops. The quality of wine produced from these two vintages is exceptional.

I'll go into the planting of our new cabernet next time. I am excited about the future. New challenges are ahead.

Pat's up stairs. Some of my stress is gone today. I got my diary over with on Thursday. I like doing it once I am into it, but that takes me some time. AND I did the kids taxes today in one hour. I always want to do mine first, but I hired this very likable cpa to do my taxes; the first one to do my taxes ever. I am also stressed because this great guy needs some time off to spend time on the water. Don't get me wrong!! Like I said he is nice and is fun, because he is older than I am and thus wiser. I will be 60 on May 3rd. This cpa I hired asked me to ask for extensions on both my personal and corp taxes. That made me delay the kids until now. I have a $14,000 refund coming to me so I need to get him motivated to file?  At his age, I guess you assumed, he is semi retired. He just bought a house that has a dock right on the water in San Rafael, therefore I plan to give him a little time to play. I am sure you know I have other challenges in my life that will keep me occupied.
