This conversation about wines in restaurants caught my eye for two reasons. First, I have been to Australia twice, and enjoyed bringing recently purchased Aussie wines to dinner (quite good but not as full bodied as any Coffaro) without paying any markup or corkage fee.
The second reason this sparked a response is because of the the ridiculous
$20 corkage fee I paid two years ago. I surprised a friend to a very
special steak dinner at Ruth Chris' in San Francisco and brought a Rafanelli
Cab. The cab was perfect with the steak, but when I got the bill that showed
the corkage fee, I almost choked! Burn me once, you'll get my business
no more.
