David Coffaro Vineyard and Winery Winemaker's Diary

Weeks 31-32
July 29, 2001 to August 11, 2001

  Sunday August 5,  2001

Pat and I are taking off to Santa Cruz in Monterey county for a few days. Next week I bottle our ZP2C so I will be back later this week to prepare. We will probably be harvesting Sauv Blanc by the end of the month.

I received my PG&E bill last week and was shocked to total up the bill on our 4 accounts to $1600 for one month. That is 2.5 times last year. Our bottling costs are going up also and I am sure Ryan will be charging more for the harvest. Unfortunately that forces me to raise my prices a little. Since we are still below other producers, I hope none of you will complain.

Pat and I have continued to taste the 2000 wines and are happy with the results. I still prefer the darker flavors of 1999, but Pat much prefers the 2000s because of their bright fruit. I must admit that these 2000 wines are my most varied. I mean that the wines taste quite different from each other and thus I am having less trouble, even at this stage, telling them apart in blind tastings. In all a much better vintage than 1996 and 1998. I also think they have much better balance than the 1997's.
