Wednesday July 4, 2012

Happy 4th. Pat and I will have some ribs and of course wine. Our 2010 Russian River Zin sale is going great. We have sold over 170 cases so far and have about 20 more to sell. We will probably have to end the offer soon. I have been tasting it the last two evenings and I have been very impressed.

When I grew up we never celebrated the 4th of July. I never even saw fireworks until I visited Disneyland when I was a teenager. The first time I remember celebrating the 4th was in Fairfax on July 4, 1976. Of course that was the bicentennial and many of us were having parties. I grew my hair long and tied it in a ponytail for the day. It was cut off the next day. I assume that day we had one of our pizza parties and consumed a lot of beer. I was into Bordeaux wine then but probably did not open very many bottles that day since of the 50+ friends who attended only a few were into great wine.

Back about 10 years ago I started going over to Steve Ryan's house and party. He lives near the high school in Healdsburg where nice fireworks were set off a little after 9 Pm. It was one of my favorite times of the year since we always had plenty of good wine open and of course great food. Steve is no longer my employee and I have not been invited back. Tonight, Pat and I will be home far out in the Valley away from any fireworks. I will have wine so I will be happy.
