David Coffaro Vineyard and Winery Winemaker's Diary

Weeks 18 - 22
May 4, 2008 - June 7, 2008

Monday May 12, 2008

Last Thursday I had a colonoscopy and I passed with flying colors. I am obviously relieved. I hope to be around making great wine for many more years.

Our new labels have arrived. We have re-designed slightly the front label and added a back label. Most of the labels won't be used until after we bottle our red wines this July. We have labeled our 2007 Dry Sauv Blanc from Cal Poly's campus in San Luis Obispo and our Late Harvest Sauv Blanc.

Matt was off tasting beer in Boonville this weekend so I held down the tasting room. We had several people in, even yesterday on Mother's Day. I did a lot of barrel tasting and I was pleasantly surprised with all the 2007 wines. I have been somewhat concerned that they were too high in alcohol but none of them seemed hot or out of balance. The 2007 Aca Modot is at 14.3 alcohol and is the only red wine under 15% this year. Our 2007 Carignan is about 15.9 alcohol and all the others are between 15 and 15.5% alcohol. I really don't have a favorite this year. I like them all. I do think the 2007 Petite Sirah will be our best Petite to date. The Aca Modot was very surprising since I wasn't impressed with the grapes at harvest, but it now may be the best wine of the vintage. It has layers of complex flavors. Both the Zinfandels are incredibly spicy with Allspice Cinnamon and clove flavors. The Cabernet is very dense while the Terre Melange is very jammy. The Carignan has dark cherry components and the Estate Cuvee is spicy and has the most acid. The Petit Verdot in the Escuro stands out and our best selling wine the 2007 Block 4 is great again. Sales of "Futures" for these wines have been strong. Come by and taste.

Pat and I are heading off to New Orleans on a train so I am looking forward to eating some great food. Here are the restaurants we will be hitting: 1) Commander's Palace for lunch. 2) Deanie's for lunch. 3) Maybe Fiorella's for fried chicken, lunch. 4) Nola for dinner. 5) August for dinner. 6) Antoine's for dinner. 7) Upperline for dinner and 8) Stella for dinner.

Steve or Matt will take care of any of your needs.
